Leading commercial flooring specialists, A Cumberlidge, have fitted over 1,500 square metres of brand new flooring as part of a ward refurbishment at Barnsley District General Hospital.
The 350+ bed hospital, built in the 1970s, serves a population of over 250,000 people and provides a full range of district hospital services to the local community and surrounding area including emergency department services, outpatients clinics, maternity and children’s services.
The Cumberlidge team was tasked with delivering the flooring element of the overall refurbishment of Wards 28 and 29 that are used for the admission of elderly patients.
Explains Damian Bradley, project manager for A Cumberlidge: “Once the existing floor coverings had been removed, the substrate had to be prepared using Tremco SX300 NA latex smoothing compound in readiness to receive the specified sheet vinyl flooring to the corridors, the patients’ wards/rooms, showers and toilets.
“When preparations were complete, we commenced work laying two different colours of Polyflor Pearlazzo sheet vinyl. We used 1380 square metres of 9071 Wild Flax (white) along the corridors and in the wards themselves and added a 200mm wide border of 9711 Atlantic Mist (blue) Pearlazzo, a total of 260 square metres, turning the vinyl up the wall by 100mm in the wards and 150mm in the corridors, forming an integral skirting.
Continues Damian: “We also installed approx. 70 metres square of Polysafe Standard slip resistant sheet vinyl to the toilets, sluice rooms and stores. Again, we turned the sheet vinyl up the perimeter walls 100mm high, to form an integral site formed cove skirting.
“The shower and wet rooms were ceramic tiled throughout so, once all the old tiles were removed, we built up the levels by approx. 25mm and formed falls to the drains using Building Adhesives’ ‘Level Max’ fibre reinforced screed. Then we fitted Altro Aquarius slip resistant sheet vinyl, turning up the walls 150mm high to form an integral site form cove.”
Concludes Damian: “On the walls we supplied and mounted hygienic wall cladding in blue and white which over lapped the cove skirting by 50mm, creating a safe and highly efficient wet room.
“We also installed Altro hygienic ArtPanels, in each of the wards and in key places in the corridors as well as splash-back cladding panels to every sink and hand-wash basin.”
