A. Cumberlidge ‘spring to it’ with new timber sports floor

Leading commercial flooring experts, A Cumberlidge, have installed a state-of-the-art timber sprung floor at the Hoyland Leisure Centre in Barnsley.

Owned by NPS Barnsley, formerly Barnsley Metropolitan Council, and run by Barnsley Premier Leisure (BPL), the Hoyland Leisure Centre offers a wide range of facilities for fitness, swimming and sports as well as hosting competitive aquatic events and sessions.

Explains David Howes, Building Maintenance surveyor for NPS Barnsley: “Following the collapse of a rain water drain, the sports hall at Hoyland Leisure Centre was completely flooded.

“We took a section of the Canadian Maple floor up in the hall and found that everything was saturated. The floor just didn’t dry out and we made the decision to invest in its complete replacement.”

Tim Vaughan, director at A Cumberlidge, continues: “David approached us late last year to seek advice in relation to the scheme. He was looking to renew the flooring in the Centre’s busy sports hall after it had been damaged in the flood.

“After removing the existing finish and waiting several weeks to ensure the subfloor was dry and secure, we began work to install a new timber sprung floor, in keeping with the first class facilities that the center has a reputation for.

“Several members of our team hold Junckers Timber Flooring course qualifications and in the summer of 2015 we invested over £2,000 in new equipment to further enhance our growth and capability in this increasingly specialist area.”

Continues Tim: “This particular project was a four week undertaking and commenced with the removal of the existing floor finish. The subfloor preparation was extremely important to ensure that no moisture was present prior to installation. The Junckers 22mm Sylvasport Beech plankwood was laid on a Blubat sprung batten to create a beautiful new floor. This style of floor is used by many sports venues including those at EIS Sheffield and the Olympic Park in London.

“We understand that BPL have had positive feedback from those using the new sports hall including gymnasts, badminton players and netball and football teams. We were delighted with the final result ourselves and as one of the very few companies in the region able to deliver such high quality projects, are particularly proud of our first sports and leisure scheme of 2016.”

Concludes David: “We’ve worked with Tim and the team at A Cumberlidge for many years now, I know I can trust them to do an excellent job and that’s just what they’ve delivered. They have even sourced and installed specialist fittings to hold gymnastic equipment in place. We’re very pleased with the end result, it’s spot on.”
