Early in 2020, the estates team at Rotherham District General Hospital announced that they would be moving the hospital’s Maternity & Gynaecology Services (the Greenoaks Centre), to a repurposed satellite building on site. The facility would be designed to allow for all Colposcopy and Hysteroscopy services, bringing women’s outpatient services together under one roof with improved facilities modernised to reflect the needs of the Rotherham community.

W Wright Electrical were tasked with delivering the project work and asked us to quote for installing the flooring and cladding throughout the new facility.

Comprising three theatres, numerous consulting rooms, four ultrasound rooms, two bereavement rooms, a waiting area, staff facilities and dirty and clean utilities, the Greenoaks building represents a significant investment for the health authority.

“Our part in the project was to install new wall and floor coverings throughout,” explains Andrew Reeves, director at A Cumberlidge.

“Working to a tight timeframe when the pandemic hit, the hospital’s director identified the building as a potential isolation area for Covid-19 patients, our first task was to completely strip out all of the floors and prepare the substrate for the new floor coverings.

“We laid 640m2 of Polyflor Forest FX ,200 m2 of Polysafe Quattro, 80 m2 of Polysafe wood-FX vinyl throughout including 45 m2 of Birch Barrier matting at the entrance to the building. We also installed 320m2 of hygienic wall cladding along with Gradus wall protection and Gradus handrails in various areas of the building.”

Commenting on the project, Matt Birkett, site manager for W Wright Electrical, said: “Having worked with the A Cumberlidge team for many years on a wide variety of different projects, they once again pulled out all the stops to complete this project during such challenging times. I can rely on the lads every time, they are all absolutely brilliant and their work and attitude always exceptional.”

Working during the pandemic, we undertook daily risk controls for clients, staff and operatives to ensure everyone’s health and wellbeing. The team strictly adhered to the Government’s guidelines on social distancing at all times and applied pragmatism, attention to detail and safe working as we would have done under any other circumstances.
